Understanding post-COVID condition (long COVID)

Post COVID-19 condition, also known as long COVID, can include a range of physical symptoms that may manifest singly, in groups, or in one series after another. These symptoms include (listed in order of commonality)::

• Shortness of breath
• Cognitive dysfunction (brain fog)
• Fatigue 
• Intermittent chest pain and/or shortness of breath
• Anxiety and/or depression
• Muscle aches
• Fever
• Digestive issues
• Difficulty speaking
• Loss of smell and/or taste

Long COVID symptoms can last anywhere from three to nine months or longer and may require extensive post-COVID care.

People most likely to get long COVID

Groups who are more likely to suffer from post-COVID condition include:

• Unvaccinated or insufficiently vaccinated persons
• Persons with existing health problems
• People who had severe COVID symptoms and didn’t seek medical help
• People with asthma or other respiratory issues
• People already hospitalized for another condition when they contracted COVID

Not everyone who fits one of these profiles will suffer from long COVID, and some people who were perfectly healthy before COVID will have extended post-COVID condition. However, being in a group included on the above list would increase your risk.
